Working with Kleiwerks International, we're embarking on a long-term programme which will aim to provide Haitian community's with safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly building techniques.
This project aims to develop building techniques which use locally available materials, meet community’s practical and cultural needs and give communities the tools they need to direct their own recovery in the long-term.
We’ve begun making adobe bricks using baggasse (the bi-product produced when sugar cane is processed) and reclaimed rubble. Over the next several weeks we’ll use these bricks to test the strength of these materials and build a test structure.
Ultimately, we’ll secure community ownership of these techniques by teaching our local community about sustainable building and working with survivors to use what they’ve learned to jump start local reconstruction efforts. This process of community ownership will be key to the success and sustainability of the project.
This project is also supported by GrassRoots United who have donated space on their base and volunteer labour.
